| Brief History | Sep 5, 2008 |
Originally dedicated to Our Lady Queen of China, Sacred Heart Parish - Jesuit was founded in 1952. A group of zealous Chinese Catholics in Cebu City, Philippines, with the permission of the Archbishop of Cebu, requested Rev. Fr. Paul O'Brien, S.J., then Superior of the Jesuits of the China Mission, for a Jesuit priest to minister to their pastoral needs.
Fr. Miguel Pardinas, S.J. , a jovial Mexican priest who had been expelled from China by the communists, arrived in Cebu and quickly organized the parish. Following to assist him was Fr. Eugene Lauzon, S.J., a French-Canadian missionary expelled from China. In a short time, Fr. Pardinas organized the Chinese Catholic Association (CCCA) with Mr. Francis Lim as its first president. The community managed to renovate the ground floor of the Convento of Cebu Cathedral and turned it into a chapel where Masses for the Cebuano Chinese were offered.
Soon, a co-educational school was established at the Mabini-Manalili area, not far from the Cathedral. Fr. Francisco Heras, S.J., also expelled by Communist China, became the first director of Sacred Heart School for Boys (now Sacred Heart School - Jesuit).
Fr. Arthur Baur, S.J., who arrived in 1956, saw a rapidly expanding community. He, together with Fr. Lauzon, bought the lot from Dr. Hildelbrando Jurado at half the prevailing market price. They worked zealously to build the church as donors poured in contributions. The church was completed in record time to celebrate its first Mass on Christmas Eve of 1960. This is the SACRED HEART CHURCH - JESUIT that we see today.
CURRENT JESUIT STAFF:
Fr. Benjamin Y. Sim, S.J. - Parish Priest
Fr. Peter Chuang, S.J. - Assistant Parish Priest
Fr. Jason K. Dy, SJ - Assistant Parish Priest
Fr. Ramon Mores, SJ - Assistant Parish Priest

tessiefajardo wrote on Sep 19, '09 Dear Fr. Sim: Five years seem to have gone so fast! I never thought that it was that long time ago. Do you still remember Ishka? She is now a doctor, and is serving her internship at UST. After that she takes the Board. Take care too, Fr. Sim! |
sacredheartparishsj wrote on Sep 15, '09 Dear Tessie, Christ's Peace! I'm doing alright here. The Sacred Heart is a bigger parish in many ways – more spacious and greater area of responsibility. But I'm enjoying my stay here, although I miss the MTQ days. I've been here 5 years na. I hope all is well with you and your family. Take care. And God bless! Fr. Ben |
